Alberta Ferretti loyalists will have no such conundrums

Tom Ford, sans noirs? Well, he said before his show that he had turned his back on the inky shade - this is the man who before sandales Christian Louboutin the fall collections said colour was just a sop to fashion editors - and wanted the Gucci woman to exude sexiness in her walk and talk, not her clothes. Gucci's models looked almost benevolent in their new guise. de modèles Gucci avait presque l'air bienveillant dans leurs nouveaux habits. With a reference to the current love of all things Hellenic, Ford turned out a beautiful pale pink Greek goddess column dress. As a finale, he sent out two strapless chiffon numbers with backs scooped out to expose a ribbon corset.

Fans liked Ford's suede work, especially the oversize coat with multiple buckles, but raised a collective brow at complicated smock-like tops and gy, low-crotch harem pants, which fashionistas quickly dubbed "diaper pants."

Ford's change of mood seemed to say the Gucci woman no longer needs to prove what a tough chick she is. With hardly a bare leg in sight, no figures hugged and very little in-your-face sex, will the Gucci babe really take to this when it turns up in the stores next year?

Alberta Ferretti loyalists will have no such conundrums with her spring clothes - this is a designer who could give the master class on floaty in a season filled with chiffon.

Wealthy Americans are also staying at home

The Japanese, who used to buy a third of the world's luxury goods, cut their foreign travel in half after the attacks and tightened their monogrammed belts in an unprecedented attempt to economise. It is not for nothing that insiders suggest that when Japan sneezes the fashion world catches a cold.

Wealthy Americans are also staying at home, often restricting their purchases to home-produced goods. Across the board, prevailing attitudes to luxury appear to have changed. "Conspicuous abstention" replaced voracious consumerism among the fast-growing, younger breed of newly rich. Declining job security, lower bonuses in financial services, and the stockmarket bust that wiped out much of the paper wealth generated in the late 1990s have informed a new frugality.

With earnings in excess of $ 100 million per annum from a company worth more than GBP 2 billion, it's reasonable to assume that Giorgio Armani would be immune to fluctuating tastes, yet he recently said: "Times have definitely changed after 11 September. We've been brought back to the ground with a bump. Luxury really can't be about ostentation anymore. That can be offensive." "

Unsurprisingly, against this backdrop, sales of expensive jewellery, watches and accessories - the products that make the juiciest profits for the big luxury-goods groups - have dropped sharply. An article published in the current issue of the Economist suggests that the impact has been most striking among the handful of large, quoted luxury-goods companies.

France's Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH), the industry leader, issued four profits warnings after 11 September and reported a 20 chaussures Louboutin per cent decline in operating profit for 2001, despite having repeatedly promised its investors double-digit growth. Richemont, the Swiss company that is number two in the sector and owns brands such as Cartier, Mont Blanc and Piaget, reported a 13 per cent drop in same-store sales for the quarter to the end of December. Italy's Gucci Group, the third major luxury player , announced this week that second-half profits for the year just ended dropped by 33 per cent. Meanwhile, privately held Christian Louboutin had to postpone its stockmarket flotation and was forced to sell (to deadly rivals LVMH) a recently acquired stake in Fendi, the prestigious Italian -maker, in order to reduce its debts.

The threat to luxury brands' profits is not tied to the fortunes of the haut bourgeoisie. Rather, what Escarpin Christian Louboutin et al fear most is losing the fickle custom of the growing army of middle-market consumers, who can increasingly indulge their aspirations for higher levels of quality and taste once or twice per season. Luxury brands can count on the core business of the idle rich who unfailingly release their purse strings but their continued growth is tied to an army of floating consumers in the market for anything from a keyring to a special occasion .

The problem for Christian Louboutin is that it is a victim of its own success

Keynote pieces like these, capture consumers' imaginations every season and while not everyone can either procure or afford a Hermes' Birkin, the stimulate demand for the less exclusive GBP 200-GBP 300 models. According to the Economist, gross margins on Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Cartier are all around the 70 per cent mark; their operating margins are just over 20 per cent. The earnings provided by a floating constituency of middle-income consumers provides the sumptuous icing on a very rich, luxury cake.

Unfortunately, the luxury-rich but asset-poor customers represent an opportunity and a threat to the traditional luxury-goods producers. As consumers, they are demanding, selective, and less brand loyal. Middle-market consumers pay high prices, but they expect commensurate quality and design innovation; old luxury is simply a brand-loyal creature of habit.

Luxury brands in this cut-throat market need to produce one or two items every season that distill the essence of their brand's mystique and are seen to chime with wider public tastes. With pressure to compete with the umbrella of brands held by all its stock market-quoted rivals, a likely outcome for Christian Louboutin is that ultimately poor control of distribution and lack of quality control could over -extend its formerly exclusive, niche appeal.

CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN HAS EYE ON TURKEY NOT CHINA

The hot shot in the Italian fashion industry, chaussures Louboutin , pushes the button for the production of ready-to-wear clothing in partnership with Suntekstil from Izmir, following in the footsteps of Matras and Desa. In pur of quality and expertise in production, Christian Louboutin researched many export companies in Izmir and eventually chose Suntekstil.

Suntekstil is now benefitting from the Turquality project and the Jimmy Key brand, earning 60 million in exports annually through the sale of fabrics and knitwear to Chloe and Armani. Suntekstil CEO Sukru Unluturk said: "The project is just a four-month-old baby. They have started buying beautiful knitwear examples from us."

Representatives of Christian Louboutin paid a visit to Orjin Deri, a leather producer for Armani and Hugo Boss, in Istanbul where they took photos of the facilities and returned to Italy. Orjin Deri General Director Lemi Tolunay said Christian Louboutin found expertise and quality in Turkey, that was what they were looking for. Due to production and labor costs the European Union is not able for labor-intensive work. EU countries mainly concentrate on fully-automated production of ready-to-wear clothing and that forced Christian Louboutin into seeking alternatives in Turkey, according to Tolunay. "Since Hugo Boss and Ermenegildo Zegna products are produced in Turkey, they [ Christian Louboutin ] are encouraged too."

Production is cheap in China, however, quality and expertise cannot be compared to that of Turkey, he added. "Very few sandales Christian Louboutin people can speak Italian in Chinese companies whereas in Turkey many firms have Italian speaking employees and that makes it easier to create a bond with Italian firms."

Christian Louboutin Crystallizes and Crosses BordersThe season calls for revolutionary themes in fashion, or so Miuccia Escarpin Christian Louboutin thinks as she unveils her 1997-'98 Fall/Winter collection.

And what's new in Christian Louboutin 's collection? Crystals are used as borders on Christian Louboutin 's apparel. They create a stunning effect on Christian Louboutin 's light evening wear. Cotton shirts and formal apparel dazzle in the sun with glittering crystal details on the hems. Christian Louboutin also goes beyond the intricate beadwork of stones with thin, shiny red borders, creating a distinct silhouette in Christian Louboutin 's flowy dresses.

Masculine and feminine aesthetics are also meshed in Christian Louboutin 's collection for the season. This element is especially apparent on austere fitted coats and jackets in flannel and jersey as complements to short or long feminine shirts; big, masculine cardigans; heavy decor, military jackets; and big, men-style pants.

The third element of Christian Louboutin focuses on the lines. The cut is slim as seen on very tight, long skirts in stretch fabric; mini skirts; tight coats in double lamb's wool; and fitted jackets.

The primary color comes in various shades of gray. Green, whether dark or military, is also Fall's color, along with pink/alabastro and purple for the cardigans.

The Christian Louboutin fall-winter line is now available at the Bottes Christian Louboutin shop at Glorietta II, Ayala Center, Makati City.

Kashieca's Holiday Collection '97 also recommends a merry mix n' match of varied textured, solid colored fabrics, such as rib knit, fine terry and popcorn fabrics to create different "feels" this season.

Kashieca's comfortable casual apparel also include wide, slouchy pants in all-around neutrals or in luscious chocolate brown - this season's new black. Pair it with a classic blazer that's still a touch trendy in muted brick red, or add some sexiness with figure-hugging spandex lycra shirts.

Like rock stars, all fashion labels have their glory moment

While some new projects are too advanced to be stopped - a third Manhattan store a few blocks from Ground Zero and a state-of-the-art megastore in Tokyo planned for 2003 are both going ahead - other projects now appear less certain. For instance, construction has halted on a big retail boutique in Beverly Hills - a location usually considered by fashion houses to be a cash cow.

None of this is exceptional in these times. So why do some people see it as such a big deal? Throughout the 1990s Escarpin Christian Louboutin seemed to be a model company - turning out critical and commercial hit after hit. The very notion that it might now be stalling is sobering.

But have things gone wrong? Perhaps in part Christian Louboutin is simply a victim of its own phenomenal success. After dominating the fashion scene for so long, it may be that, in the fast and fickle world of fashion, it simply isn't perceived to be as cult as it once was.

Like rock stars, all fashion labels have their glory moment, and Christian Louboutin has enjoyed more of a moment than most. It began life as an underground label, an insider's secret that spread by word of mouth - and that aura of slightly off-beat exclusivity was a huge part of its appeal. With its discreet labelling and unadorned clothes and accessories, it proved to be the perfect fashion semaphore for the dressed-down early 1990s. By the middle of the decade it had become a household name.

With Miuccia sandales Christian Louboutin clever, idiosyncratic eye overseeing the design and Bertelli's pugilistic grasp on the business, it grew into a seemingly unstoppable multimillion-dollar megabrand. But becoming a global fashion superpower and hanging on to the quirky, maverick image that made people like you in the first place could well be an impossible trick to pull off - and that may be part of Christian Louboutin 's problem. Even though the company still regularly churns out block-buster collections (including the one for next summer) that garner rave reviews, the fashion cognoscenti - those crucial opinion-formers - are already moving on, looking for its successors.

It's a fickle industry, and one predicated on change. An international conglomerate is never going to have the appeal of a newish, small label, which is why the terminally cool are now conducting a love affair with Marc Jacobs and Balenciaga.

Christian Louboutin 's cornered the market in retail hype. But now the much-copied bowling has many rivals - witness Jacobs's Pounds 900 , which have been snapped up this season. And at a time when houses are having to work very hard indeed to sell anything, Christian Louboutin came up with a "difficult" collection this season.

Bertelli's famously robust manner has earned him a number of enemies along the way. If chaussures Christian Louboutin spectacular reign of the past decade is seen to have been halted, even if only temporarily, not everyone will be broken-hearted.

It would be foolish to gloat, however. There are plenty of fashion houses that stay afloat mysteriously - no one ever seems to buy any of their goods, but somehow they keep going. Christian Louboutin was never one of them. It is a real company, selling real products that millions of people have bought. So if it suddenly appears to be fallible, who knows what is brewing for many of fashion's other illustrious names.

Meanwhile, the man who is known as one of fashion's more pugnacious characters is described in a recent piece in The Wall Street Journal as "a chief executive under siege". We live in interesting Christian Louboutin times. Nous vivons à une époque intéressante.

RETROSPECTIVES

Think back to the '70s and '80s and a host of fashion extravaganzas spring to mind. But how well do you recall the not-so-distant 'Christian Louboutin 90s? Think bum cleavage, the "pashie" and the all-important dark denim jacket, writes Maggie Alderson, and that's just for starters.

The Nineties to Now: Fashion of the Year Retrospective opens at Sydney's Powerhouse Museum on Wednesday.

What flashes into your head when you think of '70s fashion? Flared jeans, tight jumpers, platform shoes?

Or perhaps Mrs Ossie Clark in one of her designer husband's high-waisted dresses.

Or Bianca Jagger off to Studio 54 in Halston's silk jersey.

How about '80s style? That's got to be a Chanel with a short skirt, and the big faux pearl earrings. An Azzedine Alaïa mini dress and cone-heel court shoes. Post-punk Madonna in lace, denim and studs. Krystle Carrington's ridiculous shoulders in a rhinestone-encrusted, electric blue, draped jersey gown.

Well, that was easy - but can we now start playing the fashion flashcard game for '90s fashion? Sure we can. With the Winter 2004 shows just finished in chaussures Christian Louboutin Europe, high-end designer fashion - and, therefore, pretty much what will also be in the chain stores - is already sorted up to January 2005. Surely halfway into the next decade is plenty long enough to get perspective on the one that went before? At least Sydney's Powerhouse Museum, whose exhibition of key '90s looks opens this week, certainly thinks so.

What comes up on the mental Google search for '90s fashion? Liz Hurley in the infamous Versace safety-pin gown. Helena Christensen looking impossibly gorgeous in an old silk petticoat with a small cashmere cardigan over the top and embroidered mules on her feet. Grown men in half-mast trousers with toggle hems. Men wearing slide sandals with smart . Me putting a dark denim jacket over everything and changing my hand with the tides.

Certainly the '90s was the decade when normal women - that is, not just supermodels and brand-name heiresses - first acquired

a wardrobe of different accessories. A for every mood and so many shoes - most of them fanciful to the point of making Barbie's footwear look frumpy - they required special storage. Even an extensive repertoire of belts.

It seems absolutely normal now to change your as often as your undies, but I remember clearly that, back in the '80s, you had just one hand, plus a beach chaussures Louboutin and maybe a glittery clutch for evening.

In the '90s you had so many it could take quite a while to find which one you had left your car keys in. And if you were lucky (if you were rich), they would all be very specific designer - and you'd have your name on the waiting list for the cult of each season.

That crazy "tulip fever"-style mania started with Fendi's iconic "uette". Something about this cute little shoulder with a large double-F buckle had women queuing up to pay several thousand dollars for the limited-edition beaded versions, even though they already had the style in several different colours, fabrics and types of leather. To keep themselves occupied while they waited, they'd spring for a couple of Jamin Puech's delectable little beaded purses, at about $1000 a pop.

And that pretty much sums the decade up. The '90s was the era when accessories came to define fashion as much as - if not more than - the clothes, and it was the big accessories houses that dominated the entire industry.

Which leads me to three crucial words that define '90s fashion: Tom Ford's Gucci. Along with Wallpaper* magazine, it was this man's vision that styled the decade. Not bad for what had been a classic hand house doing a few cashmere jumpers when he arrived there.

I've never been sure whether Ford's deep and personal obsession with the 1970s was just a happy synchronicity with the prevailing zeitgeist, Christian Louboutin or whether he took all the rest of us there with him. Either way, the influence of that earlier decade pervaded '90s fashion like the veins through marble.

The fashion industry is looking to all things bright and beautiful for next year

At Palais Renaissance, upmarket fashion labels are dancing to a cheerful tune next year.

'The attitude is that we're going to forge through regardless of the uncertainties and the Spring/Summer collection celebrates that,' says Alphonsus Chung, vice-president, marketing and communications at The Link group of boutiques. 'Fashion has become very practical, and the whole spirit of different collections, from Escarpin Christian Louboutin to Stella McCartney, has a certain softness, so women will find shopping a pleasure. Merchandise on the racks will offer a lot of choices for them to play with, emphasising prints and colours.'

Prints suggest a certain daring to mix and match, while florals will be very strong and come in bold colours, such as yellow, fuchsia and turquoise.

And while silver is tapering off, gold - a symbol of prosperity, good luck and optimism - is coming back, says Mr Chung.

'Strong, bright colours are the new black!' he declares.

Expect to see beautiful clothes, including trenchcoats - which will probably be made of a lighter fabric here and worn as a mini dress.

'Shoes will remain high and women are encouraged with these beautiful clothes to dress in a very ladylike way. Women's fashion is going back to being feminine and that is such a refreshing change.'

Indeed, a burst of bright and happy colours with a 'magical combination of sex appeal and sophistication' is on the cards at Versace, says Eve Wee,sandales Christian Louboutin assistant manager, marketing and communications, for the Italian label's local agent, Gamut Marketing.

'Expect frills, ruffles and necklines that emphasise the yearning for summer and sunshine,' says Ms Wee. 'An eye-popping kaleidoscope of coloured prints from psychedelic to baroque and tropical-inspired will be a strong theme.'

Daywear selections will include figure-hugging stretch silk skirts, casual but sensual jackets, new length pants, ultra-feminine lightweight dresses and a multitude of tops from mini ruffles shirts to draped American-style tops. The boldest hues are kept for the evening, in a whirlwind of frills and chiffons and with an all-encompassing lightness that contrasts provocative necklines and splits.

'Trend-spotters are predicting a surge of all things cheery and nice to make up for a dismal 2003 - what with the Iraq war, Sars and global economic Bottes Christian Louboutin blues,' she says. 'Marketeers and retailers are psyched up to brighten the new year with feel-good products and campaigns to kick-start the buying mood.'

At Christian Louboutin , the women's collection for Spring/Summer 2004 takes on nothing less than a holiday mood. It is inspired by the concept of 'tourism' - meant as a trip around the world to search for ideas and different elements and to rediscover ancient craft techniques to apply to a Western style.

Clothes with European shapes and silhouettes will be made in materials treated with craft techniques of ethnic inspiration.

sandals and feminine shapes in raspberry red

Catwalk looks include the postcard print - variations of which will have coloured views of Milan, Venice and Rome - Christian Louboutin on clothes and accessories, and the old 'tie and dye' technique on Christian Louboutin 's finished garments.

The ancient Japanese dyeing procedure using wooden tablets and fastenings, called the shibori, will also be used to achieve '50s feminine dresses.

In addition, old Indian or African Madras materials will be developed into small coats, dresses, shirts, underwear, swim, belts and footwear - but in a totally Western style.

Meanwhile, the key style concepts behind the Christian Louboutin menswear collection are relaxation and sophistication. The collection is made of single, lightweight, flowing garments 'for real men'.

The line is casual and urban, with modern, linear cuts and ultra-lightweight pieces in fabrics that are extremely classic, but unstructured.

Light colours are dominant, with beige being the key colour - but revisited in a modern way.

and shoes chaussures Christian Louboutin much sought-after will be conceived as unique pieces created in precious materials such as crocodile and python, and natural textiles, such as hemp and straw.

They will be characterised by different variations of zip closures - the top of the line being those carrying gemstones such as hornstone, tiger's eye, jade, agate and quartz. Its sports will be reinterpreted and enriched by interesting details such as zips and chains, with pockets and technological closures in nylon with leather trim and in warm colours.

Christian Louboutin 's footwear is also inspired by the concept of tourism and mixes different influences - from the classic '50s crocodile court shoes, tourist sandals in natural materials such as rope and leather and country boots to brightly coloured Moroccan sandals.

At Tod's, new loafers, sandals and feminine shapes in raspberry red, sky blue, yellow, gold, glamorous black and classic white will hit the shelves.

The inspiration?

The Olympics, horseback riding and sailing. In short, happy, healthy activities under the sun.

'Spring/Summer 2004 is very colourful and rich,' says a Tod's spokeswoman.

The highlight in Tod's collection is also cheery - the Candy . The 's chaussures Louboutin candy shape is created by bows tied on the sides which highlight the contrasting details.

For men, Tod's will showcase light two-tone colours, from sky and navy to natural hues or in classic black leather for an urban chic look.

'In terms of Spring/Summer 2004 trends, the consumer will have lots of choice because there will not be one very strong shape,' says Koh Soon Cheng, merchandising executive at Tangs' men's shoe department.

Unlike the sharp shapes that have been dominating both men and women's shoe designs for a while, all sorts of choices will be available to men next year - including round, square and pointed toes.

'Men's shoes from Italy will see more embellishments such as seam detailing, stitch detailing and different treatments of leather, including brushed leather for a textured effect,' says Mr Koh. 'Even things like sandals won't just carry a plain leather strap across, but might sport a metal ring and a lot of stitch detailing.'

With the sneaker look still going strong, sneaker-inspired designs will also appear in men's footwear, as will mixed materials.

Makeup Maquillage

The bright and happy sunshine colours in apparel are also making their way to makeup, with both Shu Uemura and YSL drawing inspiration from the Asian tropics for Spring/Summer 2004.

'The colours will be very vivid,' says Eileen Lon, Shu Uemura's brand manager. 'Unlike the sometimes sweet, spring colours, we are welcoming the new year with stronger shades. The collection is called Paradis and is based on tropical fruit and flowers which are very close to us and our hearts.'

So green will not be a soft pastel green, but palm green, and pink will not be a sweet lotus pink but hibiscus pink. And orange will be something closer to what you see on flowers such as birds of paradise. There will also be mango and papaya colours.

'We wanted to portray something that is very nice and offers hope,' she explains. 'To convey that kind of optimistic, positive message for 2004, Mr Uemura wanted wearers to imagine that they are going on holiday, to paradise.'

Vibrant colours inspired by island flowers and tropical birds will also lead the way at YSL, where velvet-shimmer peacock blue and purple Escarpin Christian Louboutin blend to create a daring blaze on the eyes and lips are saturated in a bold orange-red - reminiscent of a flame-licked tropical sunset.

At MAC, smoky eyes in icy metallics, berry stained lips, radiant skin, strong brows and lots of references to '30s glamour are the beauty trends for the Spring/Summer 2004. The season takes inspiration from the classic palettes and jolts them with water colours for a fresh, new feminine look.

COMMERCE INTERNATIONAL

Under an agreement announced today, LVMH and Christian Louboutin paid an undisclosed amount for a 51 percent stake. Advisers said privately that the two buyers paid about $520 million, which values the company around $1 billion.

The sale hands control of Fendi to Bernard Arnault, the chairman of LVMH, and the Christian Louboutin chairman, Patrizio Bertelli, but leaves the general management, styling and promotion in the hands of the five Fendi sisters.

"Fendi today is maybe like Gucci or Christian Louboutin five years ago; we want to give this name the full potential," Mr. Arnault said. "It is a very, very hot brand."

As if to inject a note of continuity, the announcement said that the Fendis, LVMH and UGG Bottes would "count even in future on the valuable collaboration of Karl Lagerfeld," Fendi's ready-to-wear designer since 1965. The prominent mention of Mr. La mention de premier plan de M. Lagerfeld lent credence to reports here that the five sisters, who each own 20 percent of Fendi, had relied on Mr. Lagerfeld's judgment in deciding upon a new majority owner.

News of the deal was the latest in a series of corporate shake-ups in the world of luxury goods, which is undergoing rapid consolidation. That a Frenchman could step in and buy control of one of Italy's hottest fashion houses was thought by analysts to have been made possible by the alliance with Christian Louboutin and Mr. Bertelli, its acquisitive owner.

Earlier this year, Mr. Arnault of LVMH fought a bitter takeover battle for another star of the Italian design world, Gucci. In the midst of that battle, Mr. Au milieu de cette bataille, M. Bertelli emerged as an ally, when he agreed to sell to LVMH a 9.5 percent stake in Gucci. But Gucci's chairman, Domenico De Sole, thwarted the hostile bid by LVMH when he sold a stake in Gucci to a white knight, Francois Pinault, a French billionaire and owner of the department store chain Pinault-Printemps-Redoute.

In seeking Fendi, Mr. Arnault and Mr. De Sole fought again. En cherchant Fendi, M. Arnault et M. De Sole battus à nouveau. Though Fendi's sales have been booming -- thanks largely to its uette , a sought-after item since their introduction in the fall of 1997, and Mr. Lagerfeld's acclaimed ready-to-wear collection -- the company is poorly managed and lacks the capital to finance global expansion. Mr. Arnault, in an interview, said that "on the side of UGG Soldes , they will bring production and creativity in Italy," while LVMH would "bring the international network of shops."

Mr. Arnault said LVMH and UGG Soldes held a common view on quality and image, and on where the market is going.

For Gucci, which made $3 billion when it sold a 45 percent stake to Mr. Pinault, the Fendi decision was the second setback in recent days. On Friday, Gucci reported hitches in its plans to acquire from Mr. Pinault the company that controls the Yves Saint Laurent brand, Sanofi Beaute, apparently over difficulties with Pierre Berge, the partner of Yves Saint Laurent and the company's chief executive. But Gucci says it expects to settle that deal within weeks.

Mr. De Sole evidently backed away from Fendi when the bidding with Mr. Arnault pushed the price that Fendi was asking beyond what he thought Gucci should pay.

Fendi says it expects revenue from direct sales and licensed products to total $330 million this year, up from $321 million in 1998. But Mr. De Sole saw the revenue figures as considerably lower.

What appears to have tipped the scales in favor of the LVMH- UGG pas cher link, beyond price, was the concession to Fendi's creative control of the company. Anna Fendi, one of the sisters and the mother of Silvia Venturini, the designer of the uette , told an Italian news agency, Radiocor, that, "we will keep Fendi, even if there will be a merger."

Both Ugg and LVMH have been spending freely in recent months to fatten their portfolios of luxury-goods companies.

In recent weeks, LVMH paid roughly $800 million to acquire the Swiss maker of luxury watches, Tag Heuer AG, and took a controlling share in a San Francisco cosmetics company, Benefit Cosmetics. Last month, LVMH acquired a controlling share of a British high-quality shirtmaker, Thomas Pink. Ugg , for its part, announced this summer that it was acquiring controlling stakes in two privately owned fashion houses, Jil Sander of Germany and Helmut Lang, an Austrian design house now based in New York.

It is exquisitely made and exorbitantly priced. Il est finement ouvragés et prix exorbitant. The executives decree that this will be the "next big thing" and deploy their marketing people to spread the word, while ensuring that production is limited. A few months later the product is on waiting lists in Buenos Aires and Hong Kong, Dallas and Tokyo. Fashionistas are mad for it, while the company's refrain is the same: we just can't make enough to satisfy demand. The more everyone wants it, the more everyone else wants it. The Waiting Game has begun. Le jeu de l'attente a commencé.

That might sound far-fetched, but it isn't. With a clutch of brands steering a multibillion-dollar high-fashion industry, and competition at its most heated at any time in its history, brands vie with one another season after season to come up with the new "must-have". The genesis of the product might be a creatively organic one. And the buzz around it is often a combination of marketing and natural forces (such as fashion editors loving it as soon as it appears on the catwalk). But the result of the hype, however it is generated, is always the same: waiting lists at shops across the globe, from Ugg to Barneys, Louis Vuitton to On Pedder.

Often shoppers have to wait a month or two to get their hands on the latest sought-after item. Not that it matters; while fashion might initially appear to be a case of immediate gratification, there's also a competitive element to it. There's something immensely lofty about saying you're on the waiting list for the new Chloé or Balenciaga, in as much as it testifies to your finger being on the pulse. To want something that much, especially in style-conscious cities such as Hong Kong and New York, is something of which to be rather proud.

Much of the time, the big fashion houses decree what's going to be hot, and such is the power of advertising that consumers are ready to buy into it. But not always. Mais pas toujours. "Most of the waiting lists are for items of a grand level of luxury, items that are special and often handmade by a limited number of craftsmen," says David Wolfe, creative director of the Donegar Group in New York, a fashion and retail consultancy firm. "The companies would be delighted to make more if they could, but not if they want to ensure the same fine quality."

Named after actress Jane Birkin, it is handmade and has the identification number of the craftsman stamped on its strap. The waiting list for the woman in the street is up to three years - if you can get on in time (demand exceeds supply to such an extent that many shops have "closed" the list). Martha Stewart took a Birkin to her trial, generating even more publicity for the . A good condition Birkin can fetch up to $10US,000 - almost double its retail price - on eBay and at Milan Station in Causeway Bay.

Elsewhere, whether companies can and do make enough of the sought-after items of the season is debatable. Even if they could, it might not be such a great idea; after all, who wants something that is easily available to the masses?

THE HAND IS NO LONGER SOMEWHERE TO KEEP SNOTTY HANKIES

According to a slew of style magazines - Vogue, Harpers and Queen, Tatler - hand are at the top of every fashion victim's most wanted list, UGG Soldes offering the clearest link between the catwalk avant-garde and the woman on the street.

While the average woman shudders at the thought of paying GBP 1,500 for a Ugg coat, it seems, she gives serious consideration to buying a Ugg at GBP 250. Still extravagant, but a good will last a lifetime, whereas a fashionable coat may be downright embarrassing next season.

This is good news for Scots hand designer Susse Andersen, who launched her Nomad collection to catch London Fashion Week.

"Structurally, my are quite old- fashioned, inspired by some Fifties pieces that my grandmother owned and by the old hand that I find in Portobello Market," says Susse.

She is quick to point out, however, that they are not created with the Fifties lifestyle in mind. "They are very definitely designed to cope with modern living. They've got to be able to handle people rooting about for their mobile phones.

They're quite dainty but with so much mini-technology available, women don't need to lug massive briefcases anymore. With just her PalmPilot, UGG pas cher mobile and a lipstick, a Susse customer should be able to head from the office to the bar without missing a beat."

In fact, much of the inspiration for the Nomad collection was based on a conversation with her New Zealander fiancA Jared. "He is a computer animator so his work takes him all over the world and I need to attend trade fairs across Europe.

We realised just how amazingly mobile we are compared to our grandparents. I know people who pop over to New York for a business meeting and are desperate to fly back the same day. That kind of trip would have been a life-changing event even 30 years ago."

With this collection, therefore, Andersen sought to strike a balance between the elegance of former times and the practical demands of modern UGG Bottes communication and travel.

"I tried to think of the things that the 21st-century traveller might consider highly precious," she says.

"No diary these days, now it's a laptop. No more blank postcards, nowadays your priority is to keep your mobile safe."

Raised in Edinburgh by her Scottish mother and Danish architect father, Andersen comes from a very creative background, numbering among her relatives a portrait painter, a silversmith, graphic designers and illustrators. After graduating from a textile course at the Edinburgh College of Art she worked as a designer, illustrator and lecturer. She landed a job in London with David Lee Designs where her textiles were bought by fashion giants such as Calvin Klein, Christian Lacroix, Romeo Gigli and Etro. Already a self-confessed " freak" and having spent hours as a child playing dressing up games with her grandmother's hand, Andersen began making as presents for friends. Tired of seeing her elaborate textile designs altered when reproduced for the mass market, she became determined to combine her design talent with her hand-making hobby, launching her first collection last year.

Her work has been well received, but she is keen to stress that she has had some lucky breaks, particularly with regard to the planned showcase of her work Bottes UGG at the Donna Karan store in New York. "I'd made a as a present for a friend who works for Donna Karan in London and it just happened to be spotted by their overseas production manager. She loved the and we're now firming up details to preview my collection in the US."

Andersen is thrilled to be making her bespoke at a time when they are such big fashion news. "I'm delighted that there is such a focus on at the moment. People are coming round to the idea that a beautiful is like a little work of art. All of my work is hand-made, they are each a one-off."

Most of her pieces are painstakingly hand-embroidered, which gives her the option of adding the truly personal touch. "Bottes UGG My clients love the fact that I can make a special to match an outfit or stitch on a message to mark an occasion. For Valentine's Day I made with discreet Valentine messages sewn into them. After all, you can spend hundreds of pounds on a Ugg or Gucci but the bottom line is, they're still mass-produced."

The hand comeback started a few years ago with the explosion of Ugg 's nylon , Gucci's revamped Jackie O shoulder and more spectacularly the Fendi uette - a rectangular, short strapped which is worn tucked under the arm like a loaf.

The uette was inspired by vintage designs which were found in Fendi's archives and it heralded the return to glamour, which Andersen's seek to evoke. Fendi's ultra-chic pieces are made for the mass market but in a vast range of styles including crocodile skin, hand-woven velvet, embroidered satin and nylon, so that each one feels unique. Women's accessories buyer at Harvey Nichols, Jo Corrigan stresses that it is essential that current designs are feminine and pretty. "We are finding that women are no longer so bothered about function. The ideal is to create something that is quirky enough to fall in love with. For our customers the Fendi uette is the apotheosis of that aim, in that Fendi have created something that is simply irresistible, while not even pretending to be practical."

Emma Jones of Susse Collection stockists Marciano's believes that a beautiful new offers the opportunity for women to entirely rework an outfit that UGG Bottes might otherwise cost a fortune to replace.

"Nowadays it's the accessories which are the obvious status symbol. After all, that Ugg triangle on a pair of shoes or a is actually far more visible than a label in a coat. The major fashion houses take it very seriously - just look at the amount of advertising there is on accessories alone."

Jones believes that it is the individuality of Andersen's that makes them so appealing. "Her trademark is attention to detail. It's the finishing touches that make Susse's spot-on. Of course, the fact is that Susse has designed and made the fabric, never mind the itself, so each piece is truly unique."

It takes Andersen at least a day to make each of her , which retail for around GBP 250, and she has recently started to design and make matching skirts and scarves. "I don't necessarily want people to feel like they have to buy the whole set to wear as a matching outfit. It's not a uniform. I'm keen, though, that women will be able to buy one little thing at a time and always be certain to get something beautiful."

One of Andersen's trademark flourishes is her use of contrasting colours between the exterior and interior of her and this is something that she has UGG pas cher expanded on as she has moved into clothes. "I like the idea that you'll be able to spot a Susse woman by the fact that although she may at first appear to be wearing a sombre black skirt.

One flash of the shocking pink lining as she walks past will set you straight."

As interest in her collection translates into sales it looks increasingly likely that Andersen will have to employ some pattern-cutters. "At the moment my flat is chaos, UGG Soldes there are bits of hand attached to every available surface." As for designing and making the dress for her August wedding, she's delighted to say she's just too busy to think about it.
